The Beginning & The First Aeta
Elu
A mythical figure. According to legend, the Cielcin High King who first brought its tribe from its homeworld, Se Vattayu, through space to the planet Eue. Blessed of MIUDANAR.
—Its mate, AVARRA, sacrificed to MIUDANAR according to Cielcin legend.
—Their offspring, UMNA, the First Aeta.
—Its followers, among the first Aeta, and the progenitors of various lines of Cielcin succession:
—DUMANN
—IMNUN
—INUMGALU
According to this account and their own legends, the Cielcin were delivered from their homeworld, Se Vattayu, to the planet Eue by the High King, Elu, who with its adherents, the thirteen Aeta, constituted a kind of Cielcin Empire on the far side of the galaxy. After Elu’s death, the various Aeta turned on one another, their armies fracturing into tribes. Each Aeta, or clan-chief, could at one time trace its lineage by blood or conquest back to one of the original thirteen. By Hadrian’s day, those thirteen had fractured to more than a thousand different clans, each calling home a fleet of interstellar ships, some large as moons, and all distributed across the galactic volume in the Norman Expanse and the farther regions beyond the galactic core.

Iedyr Yemani
The six vayadan-generals sworn in fanatic servitude to Syriani Dorayaica. The so-called White Hand.
Vayadan Iubalu
The Four-Handed. One of SYRIANI DORAYAICA’s vayadan (generals), its servant and concubine, converted into a half-machine chimera with the aid of MINOS. Commander of the fleet at the Battle of the Beast.
Other members of the Iedyr Yemani (White Hand):
VAYADAN VATI INAMNA, the First Sword
VAYADAN HUSHANSA, the Many-Handed
VAYADAN TEYANU, the Unbreakable
VAYADAN AULAMN, the Wings of Despair
VAYADAN BAHUDDE, the Giant
Bone-white and hulking, taller than any man and far broader it was, with hunched shoulders and a head lost to shadow. I could hardly get a glimpse of it in the sparse light, though where the light caught it shone with a fire like the light of stars.
For a brief instant, I saw the last of the three soldiers find his feet and bring his plasma rifle to bear. He stood etched against the shadow and his quarry, a pitiful small thing against the Dark and the monster that had emerged from it. His rifle flashed, and for a moment then I beheld the beast clearly. Nearly twice again so tall as a man and armored all in white, its legs bent like a dog’s, its arms—and there were four of them—so long they nearly trailed the ground. And its face! Its face! It wore a horned mask with a hooked visor like the beak of some evil bird, and beneath I saw the silver-glass flash of teeth and knew it had been Cielcin once.
One of those impossible metal arms caught the soldier by the ankle and pulled. He tumbled backward and struck the floor.

A hand appeared from the smoke. A white, six-fingered hand felt around and gripped the bottom of the arch. Then an arm emerged and a pointed elbow followed by the fingers of another hand that gripped the far corner of the apartment block. The world was momentarily silent, and I stood transfixed, stunned to realize that each hand was the size of fully grown man.
...
A metal face appeared, and the terrible impression I had had of an infant only intensified, for it was bulbous and swollen, its huge machine eyes glowing like dying coals. It screamed again, jaws mighty enough to snap a man in two, and, with titanic effort, dragged its broad torso forward, shoulders scraping the sides of the avenue and cracking the archway.
And then it stood, and kept standing. Twenty feet tall it was, twenty-five. Thirty! A hulking monstrosity in black and white, clear cousin in design to the lesser giants that climbed the wall above, but greater than any I had seen. Greater than Iubalu, greater than the living failures I had encountered in the experiment tanks of Arae. Great almost as the smallest of our colossi.
I knew then with certainty that here was another of the Vayadan, the holy slaves that gathered round the person of the Prince of Princes, and facing it there in the square before the wall and the ascent, there was but one thing I could do.

Aeta & Servants Allied with Dorayaica
Umna Utaiharo
Last scion of the Line of UTAIHARO, a branch of the Line of ZAHAKA. Former master of UTSEBIMN ARANATO OTIOLO.
Piecing together what we can from the available sources, it seems that the clan Otiolo was a young, fairly minor tribe. Marlowe’s text says the Prince Aranata took its people “out of Utaiharo.” This suggests that Prince Aranata defeated another prince in combat and took his tribe for his own, making him the first chieftain of the Itani Otiolo, as any Cielcin who kills an Aeta becomes an Aeta. Such short-lived clans appear to have been common among the Cielcin, their being a species of tyrants (which explains the necessity of the Baetan class, who appear to maintain the continuity of the tribe as it changes hands and identities as it moves from Aeta to Aeta.
Tor Paulos, Howling Dark
“Aranata Otiolo called itself the Lord of the Seventeenth Branching.”
...
“Betrayer!” it shouted. “Deceiver! Otiolo brought corrosion upon the blood-clans! It slew Utaiharo. It was vayadan and should have known its place!”
...
“The line of Utaiharo stretched back to before the time of Araxaika the Almost-Blessed,” ... “It was an old line, only seventeen times broken by violence since the days of Elu. Otiolo should have shown respect.”
“I don’t understand,” I said.
... “You are a student of your own history, are you not? Know you not that when dynasties fall, they fracture? Great empires becoming little kingdoms in the rubble, ruled by those lieutenants and heirs who survive the chaos? That chaos is uatanyr, is a branching.”

Venatimn Ulurani
Former Aeta of the Ulurani clan, killed by Hadrian Marlowe in single combat at the Battle of Aptucca, allowing a nearly bloodless human victory.
One of the others, a grim figure in a greenish cloak, said, “Ulurani was a great warrior. One of the finest of the old clans. And Otiolo—Otiolo was dunyasu, but Otiolo was a beast.” It, too, looked me over with measuring eyes. “If what you say is true, Dorayaica, you bring a susulataya into our midst.”

“Surrender?” Smythe echoed when she had been told the prince’s words. “We wish to stop fighting. To make peace as equals.”
“Equals?” Aranata said. “The Aeta have no equals.” I should have recognized that statement for what it was: a warning that our negotiations were doomed from the start. But I had come too far and hoped for too long to see the truth I would not hear. I had hoped the Cielcin would be all like Uvanari. But Uvanari had been beaten, and the prince was not the captive soldier I had killed. “You would have us serve you!” he said. “And for this they will expect me to turn on Hasurumn, on Pagoramatu, and the others? Is this the way?”

Prince Ajimma turned its head, surveying the congregation with a light like satisfaction in its smooth face, nodding in the unbalanced way of its kind. Looking on, I remembered why the name of Ajimma should sound familiar to me. It was one of the princes who had absconded with a portion of Utaiharo’s clan when Aranata Otiolo had killed its former master. Syriani had mentioned its name when discussing Prince Aranata’s blasphemous murder. I studied Ajimma’s face. We were relatives, in a sense, cousins in a lineage of conquest.

Clan Otiolo
Clan Otiolo
Spoilers ahead, proceed with caution
Opposed to SYRIANI DORAYAICA.
Not much is known of the history of the Otiolo clan. The only contact between the Itani Otiolo and the Sollan Empire was during the Vorgossos affair as recorded in this text. Aside from military reports made by members of the 437th Centaurine Legion and members of Strategos Hauptmann’s staff, Lord Marlowe’s record is the only one touching on the clan at all—and is at any rate the most comprehensive. Not much else is known of this particular clan, any primary documents and artifacts having been lost in the annihilation of the Bahali imnal Akura during Strategos Hauptmann’s offensive.
Tor Paulos, Howling Dark
Utsebimn Aranata Otiolo
- Home Planet: Unknown
- Birth Year: Unknown
- Species: Cielcin
- Nationality: Itani Otiolo, Mnaema
- Blood Type: XC-2
- First Appearance: Howling Dark
Aeta Prince-Chieftain and Captain of Its Scianda; Viudihom, Master-Keeper of its People; Servant to Its Slaves. The supreme ruler of the worldship Bahali imnal Akura and head of the Otiolo clan. Lord of the Seventeenth Branching of the Line of ZAHAKA. Slayer of and former vayadan to UMNA UTAIHARO. An opponent of DORAYAICA.
—His child, NOBUTA OTIOLO, presumptive heir to the clan.
—His retainers and slaves:
—OALICOMN, majordomo and coteliho (herald) of the Itani Otiolo.
—CASANTORA TANARAN IAKATO, baetan priest-historian of the scianda, a prisoner of the Sollan Empire and the Meidua Red Company in particular.
—ITANA UVANARI AYATOMN, ichakta captain of the starship Yad Ga Higatte and a proud military officer.

Makisomn (Clan Unknown)
A Cielcin gifted to the count LORD BALIAN MATARO on Emesh by the Whitehorse Company, meant for public execution during the count's son's (DORIAN MATARO) Ephebeia. Captured during the Battle of Wodan.
Eager to get the focus off of me, I asked, “You captured Cielcin at Wodan?”
“Only a couple hundred. Hauptmann gave them over to the LIO,” Kogan said with a conspiratorial tilt of his head, referring to the Legion Intelligence Office. He leaned further in. “I was just telling your boy here that before I left my company, Commandant Alexei—that’s my old boss—retained a pair of the prisoners for sport.”

“This... emissary of yours,” Prince Aranata was saying, using the Galstani word—though I suspected he did not grasp its precise meaning. It leaned far over the table. “This gift. It would fight for us? Speak with the Aeta of the other clans? With the Hasurumn, the Dorayaica, the Gadaritanu, and the rest?”

Aranata Otiolo made a disgusted face. “One cannot serve so many masters. It is uidyryu. Unclean.” It jerked its head in the negative.
“And what of your gift?” Smythe crossed her arms, unimpressed by the Prince’s looming bulk. “An end to the fighting between your clan and our Empire? And Tanaran?”
The herald hissed, “She would starve us, my prince!”
The Aeta swatted Oalicomn with casual disdain. The herald yelped and fell silent in its seat. “You cannot have Tanaran,” he said. “And if your gift will fight with us, we shall feast on the other itanimn. Long have I dreamed of drinking the blood of the Koleritan. Perhaps the dark one will deliver them to me as he delivered Tanaran.”
“You want me to fight for you?” I was shocked.
