Chapter 1: Behold a Pale Horse

Two low-ranking soldiers are summoned before Empreror William XXIII to report a devastating encounter with the Cielcin, where a powerful, intelligent Cielcin calling itself a king threatened the throne in human language. Hadrian recognizes that this is Syriani Dorayaica and that the attack indicates unprecedented danger. After the audience with the Emperor, the surviving soldier, Carax, approaches Hadrian in awe and attempts to give him a blasphemous medallion deifying him, which he declines.
Chapter 2: The Firstborn Son of Earth

Hadrian is escorted to a private audience with Emperor William XXIII, who thanks him for his victory at Aptucca, but insists he uphold the Empire's propagandized version of the events. The Emperor then assigns Hadrian the mission of investigating a missing legion near Gododdin, the first time Hadrian heard of the world he would one day destroy. The Emperor additionally "requests" Hadrian take his son, Prince Alexander. Hadrian recognizes the mission as an impossible task, one he is meant to fail. Before leaving, Hadrian requests access to the Imperial Library at Colchis, but it is deferred.

During the ensuing mission briefing, Hadrian clashes with Imperial officials who provide minimal intelligence about the missing legion. Afterward, he confides in Pallino and his crew that he believes the mission is likely designed to remove him from power and relevance for decades. He speculates that the political elite, possibly even the Emperor, are fearful of his growing reputation. Nevertheless, he accepts the burden of duty, aware that the threat of the Cielcin is too great to ignore.

Hadrian is summoned to meet Empress Maria Agrippina before departing, where she coldly evaluates him and makes it clear that her son's safet is his responsibility. He then meets the inexperienced but eager Prince Alexander, and Princess Selene, whose presence unsettles him due to his visions from Vorgossos of a possible future involving her.

As Hadrian and Prince Alexander arrive aboard the Tamerlane, Hadrian establishes discipline by treating Alexander as a squire rather than royalty. Afterward, Hadrian and his officers discuss both the prince and the broader political situation, and Lorian Aristedes, an intus pushed to the legions by his father, suspects that the Emperor may be using Alexander and the mission as part of a larger power play. While some speculate that Hadrian could leverage the prince for influence, he insists his goal is to end the war, not gain power.
Chapter 6: Alone

Immediately after boarding the Tamerlane, Hadrain retreats to his private quarters, where he is joined by Valka. He tells her of Prince Alexander and his encounter with the Empress, including her suspicion of Valka. They discuss the political situation, including figures like Augustin Bourbon and Sir Lorcan Breathnach, and Hadrian confides that he believes the mission is a setup.
Chapter 7: Before the Sun Fell

Roughly 12 years later, Hadrian arrives in orbit over Gododdin. On the bridge of the Tamerlane, Captain Corvo establishes contact with Sir Amalric Osman, the Knight Castellan of Fort Din. Learning that no new information has been discovered regarding the missing convoy, Hadrian chooses to land in the city rather than directly at the fort. They experience Gododdin as a vivid, living world, particularly its Green Sea of engineered crops feeding the Empire's armies. Upon arriving at Fort Din, Hadrian notices an orbital mirror intensifying the sunlight, a symbolic moment for the future destroyer of this planet, currently welcomed as a hero.
Chapter 8: Dream Evil

After arriving on Gododdin, Hadrian is pulled into a grim analysis of the missing Imperial convoy. He learns that five ships were lost: Valiant, Old Iron King, Emperor's Hand, Red Defender, and Merciless, with only fragmentary distress signals received. Tor Varro rapidly calculates the estimated search area as being thousands of cubic light-years, highlighting the near-impossibility of finding the ships. Commodore Mahendra Verus, a patrician officer commanding the Mintaka, explains that outrider scouts have already been dispatched but won't arrive for months.
Discussion turns to the nature of the attack: possibilities include the Cielcin or the more technologically advanced Extrasolarians, with Varro arguing the latter to be more likely given the precision of the attack. Hadrian recalls his time on Arae, where he learned the Extras and Cielcin may be cooperating. Osman independently raises this as a possibility, but Hadrian deflects publicly while privately acknowledging the truth. The tentative plan becomes to use scout ships and probes to begin scanning the vast search area, with Hadrian and the others deciding to remain for now and collaborate with the local forces.
