Emesh

A watery world in the Veil of Marinus; seat of House Mataro. Home of the coloni Umandh and the subterranean ruins at Calagah. Originally a Norman colony.
- Tor Paulos, Empire of Silence

Emesh was colonized by the Norman United Fellowship, a small-state direct democracy, in the early sixteenth millennium. The planet is mostly oceanic with a diverse native aquaculture, and as such many of Emesh’s settlements were built on atolls or islands that are all that remain of the planet’s long-dead volcanic past. It has only one continent, Anshar, a small, volcanic outcrop a mere fifteen hundred miles across. There the NUF built its capital, Tolbaran. When House Mataro invaded, they built an advanced military base on Borosevo atoll, which in the centuries since has grown into a sprawling labyrinth of canals and platforms. Tolbaran has now been relegated to a secondary role in civic life. Much of Anshar’s land in given over to agriculture, as the volcanic soil has proved amenable to agriculture and viticulture.

The planet has two moons, Armand and Binah. Binah, the larger moon, has recently been opened for terraforming, and algae cultures have taken hold extremely aggressively. Armand is too small to hold an atmosphere but plays host to vigorous mining operations, especially of heavy metals.

During a brief sojourn to Veisi’s castle in Springdeep, I learned much of Emesh’s pre-Imperial history: about the fishing culture and the network of island towns that dominated the planet from cap to shrunken polar cap; about the settlement and the first contacts with the Umandh; about the guerilla fighting and the peasant fishing junks wrecked at sea, dragged under by the coloni natives. I learned about the annexation, the decade of struggle between the freeholders and the three massed Imperial Legions under the direction of the first Count Mataro, Lord Armand, for whom the smaller moon was named.
Empire of Silence, Chapter 63: Calagah

Known as Tamnikano to the Cielcin.

Primarachate: Norma; Veil of Marinus

Province: Unknown

Known Prefectures:

Borosevo: Governed by Count LORD BALIAN MATARO.

Tolbaran: Governed by Archon LORD PERUN VEISI.

Unknown: Prefecture unknown for the island city of Ulakiel, site of the Umandh alienage.

Locations of Interest:

Anshar: a small, volcanic outcrop a mere fifteen hundred miles across; southern continent of Emesh; location of Tolbaran Prefecture, where the Norman United Fellowship had built its capital when the planet was colonized in the early sixteenth millennium.

Borosevo: originally designed as an advanced military base for House Mataro, the city was built on a ring-shaped atoll using steel pilings rammed deep into the earth. The centuries since its founding has turned the city into a sprawling labyrinth of canals and platforms, with distinct sections of the city for the wealthy and the poor.

Borosevo Castle: stands above the Colosso and the Chantry sanctum, sits upon a gray concrete ziggurat a thousand feet higher than the low, tin-roofed houses; inhabited by the ruling House Mataro

Borosevo Colosso: large stadium used by the city for formal ceremonies and entertainment, primarily known as the location of the city's battles between the Borosevo Sphinxes (gladiators) and criminals, slaves, and conscripts, known as myrmidons. The uniform of the Borosevo Colosso is red; the vomitorium is lined with the jade sphinx banners of House Mataro and with massive brass gongs.

Calagah: archaeological site in Southern Emesh; home to subterranean ruins believed to be associated with the Quiet, inspection of the site is subject to the planet's extreme tides, constructed of an unidentifiable black, smooth stone

Springdeep Castle: located on Emesh's southern continent Anshar, in the city Tolbaran; home of Archon Lord Perun Veisi

Tolbaran: located on Emesh's southern continent Anshar, the city was founded as the capital of the Norman United Fellowship during the planet's colonization; governed by Archon Lord Perun Veisi.

Ulakiel: site of Emesh's Umandh alienage, the largest single refuge for the native intelligent species; a rare set of antique volcanic outcrops from a time before Emesh's tectonic death; black stone rose for half a hundred feet above sea level to a worn-down promonotory, upon whose crown the island's human vilicus, NILES ENGIN had built his keep, overshadowing the Umandh's grubby hovels. Surrounded by a heated chain-link fence to contain the Umandh.
