The woman beside him—her face concealed by a paper fan—spoke in a stage whisper. “The devil?” She let her hand fall, revealing a face concealed by an articulated ceramic mask in the style of Jadd, not unlike the one Rafael Hatim had worn, save that hers was white. I wondered at that, for in Jadd only the men of the eali al’aqran concealed their faces. Only the great princes and satraps of the realm and their sons, not the aryabite soldier caste or the other, lesser nobiles. Women were to be seen, and men invisible. Something about the inversion of seeing a woman masked Jaddian fashion disturbed me, as did her accent. She had none, nor did the man in the Nipponese robe. Their voices were flat, expressionless, more machine than human. Urbaine and Severine—even Iovan—still possessed the fingerprints of human feeling in their words. I wondered if these two were older, or if their hollowness of expression was a choice as well, an affectation like those dull, metallic eyes.
