Adri had owned the little pub for more than a decade—going on two, maybe—at any rate far longer than Kalas had been on Kanthi. She’d started it young, and might have been only a year or two his junior. She smiled crookedly up at him, the heavy makeup around her eyes making her look more tired than beautiful—not that Kalas didn’t think she was beautiful. She was the sort of woman they said had aged gracefully, who’d come to the good side of middle aged looking only a little older than she had as a girl. A little wiser, perhaps. A little more sad, with a knowing light in those blue eyes. She was an offworlder like him, yellow hair shot now with gray she hadn’t bothered to hide.
