On Earth in the early second millenium C.E., homobatrachotoxin was known as a potent neurotoxin belonging to the batrachotoxin family. It's a steroidal alkaloid primarily found in certain species of New Guinea birds, specifically in the genus Pitohui. These birds used it as a chemical defense mechanism. Previously, batrachotoxins were thought to be exclusive to certain neotropical poison-dart frogs.
