III. Spoiler & Speculation Policy

Our Spoiler & Speculation Policy

The guidelines listed below are included in our Code of Conduct policy. As such, failure to adhere to these guidelines may lead to contribution/account review . Spoilers are completely okay (and desired) if clearly identified and included in the proper sections, but we don't want to ruin the experience for new readers.

As defined by Wikipedia, a spoiler is "any form of information which reveals an element, summary, or detail of any piece of fiction which gives away the outcome of a dramatic scenario. Since the enjoyment of fiction might depend on the dramatic tension and suspense which is built, the external revelation of plot elements can 'spoil' the enjoyment that some consumers of the narrative would otherwise have experienced."

  • Spoilers must be clearly marked according to the recommendations below. On each page, all header information and content above the Spoiler Warning Box must be kept spoiler-free. Page Content below the Spoiler Warning Box may include spoilers; thus, users proceed at their own risk.
  • Character Pages using a templated format are typically structured with book-by-book sections. Though these sections are below the Spoiler Warning Box, please do your best to include spoiler information under the relevant header. All other Page Types can be full-spoilers under appropriate subheader titles.
  • Avoid revealing plot-critical information without notice. Best practice is to give a warning.
  • The Nov Belgaer wiki only permits reference to content (books, art, etc.) approved by and publicly and officially released by Christopher Ruocchio.
  • Reference to Patreon-exclusive content, including Sneak-Peeks, Behind-the-Scenes Writing and Art Previews, Writing Reports, Chapter Samples, Polls, and Trading Card Art and Lore Pages) is prohibited, except where such material has been publicly and officially released by Christopher Ruocchio.
  • Sharing illegally obtained or pirated information is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate removal of the contribution and deletion of the user’s account.
  • Sharing or referencing early-access content, such as Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs), Beta Reader Copies (BRCs), Copy Editing files, Uncorrected Proofs, is strictly prohibited. Contributions relating to the final versions of the text must wait until the earliest official release date has passed before publishing.

Spoiler Warnings

Spoiler Warning Box

The most common spoiler warning is the Spoiler Warning Box.

On each page, a spoiler notice should be placed directly above the first section that contains spoilers. You may decide where the spoiler notice should be placed, but it should always be above the History section (if the page has one), and always below the Introduction.

The text that the notice should contain is determined by which book the page contains spoilers for. If, for example, a page contains spoilers for up to Demon in White, then the notice should look like this:

Full Demon in White spoliers below, proceed with caution.

If a page contains spoilers for the entire series, you can instead use this:

Full series spoliers below, proceed with caution.

To insert a Spoiler Warning Box, simply use the below syntax:

<div class="warning">
  <p>[YOUR TEXT HERE]</p>
</div>

Pop-up

Pop-up modal has been reworked since something seems to have broken in the latest update. The new pop-up can be added to a page by copying the code here anywhere in the body of your page.

Currently the popup will show once per session if accepted, and will reappear again after the browser or tab has been closed.

Speculation

Any speculative content should be avoided, unless included in a section specially designated and demarcated for such. Each edit made to the wiki should be backed by the source material, and should not reflect any unconfirmed theories.
