Enigma of Hours

A massive Exalted Sojourner starship on which the Meidua Red Company sought passage to the Extrasolarian world Vorgossos. Captained by CAPTAIN EIDHIN. All passenger ships and cargo must relinquish control of navigation while Eidhin's helmsmen ferry the ship to the Enigma's hold. One such helmsman mentioned in Lord Marlowe's account is NAZZARENO.

The Enigma of Hours was cigar-shaped, perhaps a hundred miles from end to end, perhaps longer, and perhaps a tenth that across. I never saw much of it, but deduced from those parts I did see that her front end was open to vacuum. The crew section and drive cores were in the aft, separated from the docks and the city by a vast bulkhead that sealed the back end as surely as the front was open.

“Several . . .” Her voice trailed off, calculations turning over in her mind. “That’s not possible. You’re talking about speeds several thousand times light.”

“’Tis possible,” Valka said coolly. “I did time on a Demarchy courier when I was younger that averaged three thousand c.”

The visitor’s port was a single road, proceeding left and right in a great loop so that it made a circuit around the Enigma’s entire circumference, with ships docked in berths to either side. The concourse lay open to the air, which hugged the rotating inner surface of the Sojourner or else was contained by the static fields that guarded the ship’s open mouth. I realized on stepping out from the shadow of the umbilical hall that my original understanding of the ship had been wrong. This was not March Station. Not a city at all. There were very few other people on the concourse, and most of them seemed to know exactly where they were going and why. They moved ship to ship with the determination of executives on the cusp of some business arrangement. Perhaps that’s what they were.
