Prince Kaim du Otranto

PRINCE KAIM SANCHEZ CYAXARES NAZIR-VINCENTE OLORIN BAN OSROES BAN ALDIA DU OTRANTO.

Called the DARKMOON and known to HADRIAN MARLOWE as SIR OLORIN MILTA, a Maeskolos of the Fire School’s Second Circle. Grandson of HIGH PRINCE ALDIA DU OTRANTO.

—His alkidarae, his concubines:

KALIMA DI SAYYIPH, of House Sayyiph, his closest companion and confidant.

—TIADA DI UMAZ, of House Umaz, also a Maeskolos of the Fire School’s Fifth Circle.

    —BELIT & SANAZI.

—His bodyguard, BARAZ DU SIMAR, of House Simar. A Maeskolos.

—His late father, PRINCE OSROES DU OTRANTO.

ADMIRAL VELKAN SERPICO, supreme commander of the Jaddian armada dispatched to assist the Sollan Empire in the war against the Cielcin, captain of the flagship JNS Mnemon. An aryabite.

—His subordinate, CAPTAIN FADROH AFSHARIRAD, a close friend of Prince Kaim’s and captain of the JNS Albaspatha. An aryabite.

    —His subordinate, CAPTAIN SERENELLI.

LIEUTENANT JINAN AZHAR, an officer in the fleet and former lover of HADRIAN MARLOWE. An aryabite.

—His ancestor, PRINCE KATANES DU OTRANTO, first High Prince of Jadd, Duke and later Prince of Laran, and the man who won Jaddian independence in the Jaddian Wars and brought House Otranto to supremacy amongst the Jaddian houses.

While the captain bowed, I glanced at Valka, then up at Lorian and Bassander Lin flickering above the holography suite’s central plinth. I supposed that I should not be surprised so august a personage as the Darkmoon Prince of Jadd—the man who, it was said, would one day take his grandfather’s place as First of the Princes of Jadd—would wish to see me. Had I not been a guest of the Grand Conclave on Padmurak? And of the Emperor himself more times than I could count? Yet here was a man I knew only by reputation. Great among the great of the galaxy. A peerless warrior, they said, as fierce in debate as he was in battle. A great patron of the arts, they said, and a greater lover of women.

A poet, a priest, and a prince in one.

One of the more amusing stories I heard oft repeated of Prince Kaim praised his piety and restraint for reducing his royal harem to a mere one hundred twenty-five bound concubines. That was a holy number, and struck a balance between the opulence expected of a man of his station and the self-restraint admired in a servant of his god.

I had also heard it said by certain, less charitable sources, that the prince was a fearsome drunkard with a temper like the sun, that he kept the company of boys as much or more than that of his women, and—most sordid of all—that he had conspired to murder his own father, Prince Osroes, the former heir presumptive to the high throne of Jadd.

I was not sure what to believe, and had until that moment little cared. Prince Kaim had been almost unreal, a figure on the edge of the map, little more than the dragons painted there by the superstitious cartographers of old.

Now he was as real as those dragons had proved to be, and present.

The prince drank. “Prince Aldia made his commitment without the support of the Domagavani. The other princes denied him. ‘This is not a Jaddian matter!’ they said, and so the fleet was withheld. But it is said that Aldia sent Prince Kaim and many of his own servants to the Veil of Marinus and beyond. There were davoi brought in chains to the Alcaz du Badr, to the Tower of Mirrors itself! Prince Kaim testified before the Domagavani, saying this was our fight as well! He slew one of their princes before our princes. There before the assembly!”

“I didn’t know that!” I said, and sat a little straighter. “When was this? Which prince?”

“I do not know,” Hatim said. “I have no talent for their names. But this was was .  .  .  perhaps two hundred standard years ago? It is strange to me you do not know this, of all people, my lord.”

I ticked the numbers off on my fingers. Two hundred years ago I was on trial for witchcraft before the Chantry’s Inquisition on Thermon. It was no wonder I had not heard the tale. By the time I had escaped to my imprisonment in Maddalo House, the story would have been but small news on Nessus.

Ashes of Man, Chapter 15: The Prince

Following the Sollan-Jaddian joint assault in ISD 17131 on the previously-undiscovered MINOS research facility on the planet Ganelon, Prince Kaim summons HADRIAN MARLOWE to the Jaddian flagship JNS Mnemon to reveal that he has been disguised as SIR OLORIN MILTA to participate in the war effort against the Cielcin.
