Enar (Vaiartu People)

MAJOR SERIES SPOILERS

The First. The Stonebuilders. An ancient and extinct species of xenobite who, according to Lord Marlowe’s account, ruled much of the galaxy and destroyed millions of planets and races several million years ago, and whose legacy explains the relative emptiness of the universe. Not attested to in the fossil record. Of the planet Vaiartu.

How can I describe their shape? Those images worn down by the passage of so many aeons? Crab-like they were, bodies flat and squashed, supported by crooked limbs—four or six or eight—no two seemed alike. I saw no sign of eyes nor shape of head, and here and there they carried weapons in pincered hands. The bas-reliefs showed them conquering other creatures, things stranger and more hideous even than they. Rank upon rank of jagged writing ran along above and below the figures, no doubt describing the feats of those ancient conquerors in lurid detail.

Kingdoms of Death, Chapter 35: The Broken Circle

The Atropos Expedition, commissioned by EMPEROR SEBASTIAN XII, tasked SIR DAMIEN ARADHYA and the starship ISV Atropos with the investigation and excavation of ancient Vaiartu ruins discovered on the remote Outer Perseus world of Nairi. This mission inadvertently led to the discovery of a Monumental (Watcher), whose buried remains drove the expedition to suicide and confirmed the first concrete evidence that the gods of the Cielcin were real. Contrary to prior beliefs, HAPSIS, the Contact Division of the Imperial Intelligence Office, now discovered that the Enar were real and are but one of up to four ancient civilizations.

Four known factions:

    The Vaiartu

    The Sujaru

    The Sibaru

    The Onharru

Rassam and Carter holographed and studied every corner of every gallery in that hideous place, and began the long but steady work of translation. The walls on every level were covered in drab friezes that at the height of Vaiartu power must have been a wonder to behold. There were portions still painted, recalling the Hulle Frieze in the hypostyle. The bottommost layer depicted the crabbed forms of the Vaiartu battling one another with primitive weapons, with blade and club and claw. Four-legged ones fought with six-legged, and six-legged with eight. Beneath them were mounded the cracked carapaces of their brothers. The level above showed those same armies prostrated, kneeling before a creature that seemed a formless cluster of feathered wings whose pinions bent to place a star upon the crown of one.
