“You’re one of the new ones, aren’t you?” I asked. We’d taken on new men for the expedition. So many of the Red Company’s technical and support staff had been stripped from the Tamerlane after my trial on Thermon. Ship technicians and engineers were always in short supply, and with the Tamerlane in mothballs with its crew for almost a century while I languished in a gilded cage on Nessus, they had been needed elsewhere. I’d been given new men when the crisis on Eikana had ended my seventy years in purgatory.

The man stopped fussing with the security terminal. “Yes, Lord Marlowe. First tour.”
