“The world is soft like the ocean is soft. Ask any boatman what I mean. But even when it is at its most violent, Hadrian . . . focus on the beauty of it. The ugliness of the world will come at you from all sides. There’s no avoiding it, and all the schooling in the universe won’t stop it.”
— Tor Gibson [1]

In Ashes of Man
Died in ISD 17098 on Thessa (Colchis). Following his death, Hadrian Marlowe visits the athenaeum at Nov Belgaer, and Tor Arrian reveals Gibson's backstory. Tor Gibson was born Prince Philippe Bourbon of House Bourbon of Verhaut. When Philippe's father, Prince Charles III backed Philippe's younger brother for succession, Philippe rebelled. This started the Septembrine Revolt*, a vicious poine civil war, which ended with Philippe's exile to Belusha.Lord Augustin Bourbon is his son, and Prince Charles V Bourbon, his nephew.Following the events of Kingdoms of Death, Hadrian Marlowe no longer has the highmatter sword given to him by Sir Olorin Milta. However, during Ashes of Man, when Hadrian is at Maddalo House on Nessus, he contemplates whether the Jaddian assassin Irshan on Forum used Lord Augustin Bourbon's personal highmatter blade. The mint mark on the highmatter reservoir is the Greek letter Φ (phi), meaning the sword was made on Phaia, not Jadd. This led Valka Onderra to the hypothesis that the sword may likely be Philippe Bourbon's (Gibson's) sword, surrendered before his exile to Belusha.
* The Septembrine Revolt was a poine civil war fought in the sixteenth millennium between two factions of House Bourbon of Verehaut, started by Prince Philippe Bourbon, who attempted to claim the title of prince, but was blocked by his brother, Prince Charles LIV. Ended with Philippe’s exile to Belusha.
